America’s natural state is tribal. All of its many racial, ethnic, and religious groups variously compete and cooperate with each other as their interests demand. Imagine a bunch of feuding nation-states, all with different racial, ethnic, and religious makeups, many of them operating under different laws de facto (“White Privilege”, etc) or de jure (the territories, etc), held together by one larger empire (the State). All of these nations cooperate with each other and compete with each other. Alliances are made and alliances are broken. Some have blood feuds going way back or imported from their “old countries.” All compete for resources, jobs, and land.
And it has to be a real idea. Not that “we are all Americans” bullshit, because we already know we’re all Americans — that doesn’t say anything. What does it mean to be an American? What ideals will you fight and die for? What ideals will make you sacrifice yourself for someone from a different tribe? All Empires need ideology.
