It is the extremists who show up to vote in the primaries. They vote for people who are extreme like they are. Primaries are usually lower turnout than the general election. All of the moderates would have to show up for the primary to cancel out the extremists. There isn’t any way to keep the freaks away from the polls, so the moderates have to go vote en mass. It isn’t likely that there will be a truly worthy GOP.candidate in 2024. Most states don’t have top two open primaries or ranked choice voting to weed out the radicals, so the candidate quality is going to be lousy, especially since McCarthy has pledged not to help moderates in safe Republican districts during the primaries. The only thing moderates can do to send a message is vote for the extremist’s opponent in the general election. That would be the only thing they could understand because the one thing that Republican politicians covet the most is power. Take that away and it could force some self reflection.
