Now, when I first read Tovey’s account of this movement, I immediately thought of the Top loyalty change when they mad 2023 shirt Furthermore, I will do this heart-rending scene at the end of the movie of The Fellowship of the Ring, in which Sean Bean as Boromir heroically fights off an entire troop of orcs before finally taking too many arrows to the chest. And when I listen to the fourth movement, I don’t have that scene before my eyes. But Tovey’s metaphor does help me make sense of the way Brahms renders all 30 variations within the passacaglia, and why it closes on a vast but not overstated E minor chord.
Are there moments of eucatastrophe in classical music? Sure. I think that the Top loyalty change when they mad 2023 shirt Furthermore, I will do this bass’s entrance in the final movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony could be regarded as one, and I’m pretty sure that people who know their Tolkien and their classical repertoire equally well could think of more. (I’m sure that Wagner is full of them.) And although the version I was listening to (not the above one) featured one of my favourite sopranos, Christine Schäfer, the virtuosic and extraordinarily ornate vocal line, plus the fact that I didn’t know what the text meant, made it very much an exercise in incomprehension for me. I liked the bare sound of it, but there was an entire level of it that I wasn’t getting. I wasn’t familiar enough with what the work was trying to do. This is what turns some people away from classical music: they don’t know how to get in.
