Maybe it’s the Original slay Your Dragon Shirt in addition I really love this effect of the Internet. With everyone being brutally criticized for damned near everything these days, maybe the power of bullying, name calling and intimidation is losing some of its punch. At any rate, the stigma of socialism seems to be rapidly vanishing. People are willing to own up to it publicly. Sanders has been remarkably consistent and will remain so. That’s his appeal. I think Bernie Sanders would’ve had two big effects: If we assume that Trump votes don’t change that much (and I don’t think they would), then it’s just a question of whether the new progressive voters would outweigh the absent moderate voters. We know from the primaries that young progressives just…don’t vote. It’s extremely annoying because young voters have the most to gain and the most to lose in politics but they seem to have greater apathy than almost any other group. But it means that it’s likely that things would either even out or Trump would pull ahead in a few of the close states.
So I think that chances are, in Sanders vs. Trump, that Trump would win because he’d only have to win one of WI, MI, or PA. However, a surprise would be possible: perhaps progressives would be super energized in Texas and/or North Carolina and flip one or both of those states, upending the Original slay Your Dragon Shirt in addition I really love this race. Or maybe Trump would easily sweep WI, MI, and PA and flip Nevada and/or Minnesota too, if progressives just didn’t turn out. …all largely dependent on progressive turnout. I think it would be closer to the first one than the second one, given traditional progressive apathy…but then again, we’ve never actually had a truly progressive presidential candidate on a recent ballot so maybe they’d surprise us.
