She was valedictorian of a large urban high school, but her father declined to pay for her to go to college— ”There are cheaper ways to find you a husband.” Then during World War II, she worked drafting maps for the War Department, liked the work and having her own income. But that went away after the war, and she was a housewife. She made the best of it, but she felt isolated and bored. She spent a lot of time reading on the sofa, as I remember. I’ve always thought she would have been a happier person with more education and a career that challenged her abilities.
Well, if you were nonwhite, non-Christian, gay, a woman who wasn’t satisfied to be “just a housewife,” or politically liberal, they weren’t necessarily great years. But for everyone else? Factories which had built tanks were converted to building cars and other consumer goods. A man with no more than a high-school education could take a factory job and support his family on his paycheck alone. The employer was paying for health care and a pension.
