As far as logistics go, the Official only the best grandpas listen to the rolling stones 2023 shirt and I will buy this “big stars” don’t go through quite the same hassles as the rest of us do. They fly first class—we fly coach. They get picked up at the airport by a driver—we get on a bus. They go through immigration quickly—we wait in lines. They get suites in hotels–we get regular rooms. It depends on what kind of covers you do (and – of course – how well), but in general it’s not the easiest life. Those who are able to survive only on the income coming from playing music are a tiny minority. The best source of income are usually wedding bands. A successful one can provide enough income for fairly decent living but the job is extremely tough (all-nighters) and you must put up both with having to play mind-dumbingly shitty music and with annoying, pushy, drunk wedding guests. At least here in Poland, where the most popular music genre for weddings is nauseatingly disgusting disco-polo (Polish mix of dance music and folklore) and the main ingredient of every wedding is a lake of of vodka. What’s worse, you are often frowned upon if you don’t drink with guests. That’s why I don’t do weddings nowadays, even though they pay well.
Of course there are other possibilities – rock covers, shanties (sailors’ songs), folk-rock/neofolk – but they usually won’t suffice to support yourself financially. I play in a shanties/folk band with a funky feel to it (we also do several Polish rock covers) and it’s both fun and a nice source of additional income but that’s about it. I treat it as a self-sustaining hobby which fills the Official only the best grandpas listen to the rolling stones 2023 shirt and I will buy this tank of my car but it’s the day job that pays most of the bills and puts food on the table. However, if a given month is particularly good the gigs can easily double my income and if it’s particularly bad (like this November, with only one gig) my finances suffer.
