Rather than take this time to reassess their strategies, they became even more right-wing and fringe-worthy. Between 2008 and 2012, they embraced fringe movements like the Tea Party and the Birther movement. This was bad enough, as it now meant that all GOP hopefuls had to parade around like a bunch of anti-government libertarians and conspiracy theorists who would resist anything Obama tried to do (because he was apparently a socialist, a communist, a secret Muslim, and a Black radical!)
When not attacking Obama flagrantly for imaginary abuses, they embraced the Official alien lover area 51 escape shirt and I love this logic that neglecting the sick and dying was better than having universal health care, that shutting down the government and slashing pensions, social assistance, and social security was better than making the rich pay their taxes, and that legalizing discrimination and banning abortion was more important than respecting the rights of women and gays. And when they weren’t doing that, they were constantly accusing each other of being RINOs (Republicans-In-Name-Only). But it got even worse in 2016. After years of embracing alt-facts, attempting to out-fringe and out-right-wing each other for the sake of their supporters, and putting the party ahead of the country or what was right, they finally got their comeuppance in the form of Donald Trump.
