If anyone reading this hasn’t seen the Muhammad ali r.i.p graphic shirt Also,I will get this film, I am about to spoil it for you. But I’m also not about to, because in a way, Pulp Fiction assumes that you already know how the stories it contains ought to go. And if you aren’t aware of how they’re expected to go, I don’t know if the film seems as good. Pulp Fiction was striking on its release partly because of its combination of shocking violence and dark humour, but that wasn’t in itself unprecedented. David Lynch’s films of the late 80s and early 90s—basically, Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart—had a somewhat similar combination of humour and extreme violence. But Lynch’s films always seem to be in the service of some peculiar vision of Lynch’s own. When it gels, as in Blue Velvet and, I think, Mulholland Drive, they are powerfully affecting as well as strange and unsettling. Blue Velvet is about innocence and experience, and Mullholland Drive is too, but it’s also about Hollywood and what Hollywood does.
