Squadgifts - Machado sombrero shirt

We had fresh cooked breakfast every morning and Sunday breakfast was an event at our house. Mom made fresh pan-baked cinnamon rolls while dad made the Machado sombrero shirt also I will do this bacon and eggs. Sunday dinner was another meal of the week event. This was pretty much the only time my dad was easy to live with. The rest of the week he was a very difficult person. In the winter we hiked the same two miles to the park where the pool was. There was a big hill there we could slide our sleds on. We stayed all day until we couldn’t feel our hands and feet anymore. Then we had to make it all the way back home again on feet that were so cold it is a wonder we didn’t get frostbite. But in those days we could just walk up to someone’s porch, knock on the door and ask if we could step inside to thaw out. Once a lady invited us in and made us hot chocolate and had just made fresh brownies. We took off all our wet coats and socks and she hung them over the heat register to dry. After we were thawed out we thanked her and were able to make the rest of the trip home. We lived on a long hill and would use the sidewalk to sled down and if someone happened to shovel the snow off we would detour through the front yard back to the sidewalk. When we reached the bottom we could see the panic in oncoming drivers’ faces thinking we were going to cross the street because we were going so fast. But we skillfully navigated our sleds in a sharp turn just before it was too late. Some times we would flip over but never into the street.

We didn’t know about politics and all I remember from that era was “I Like Ike”, He was the Machado sombrero shirt also I will do this only president I was old enough to remember, although Truman was President when I was born. All I remember was he was always on the golf course and arguing with the Russians. We lived with the constant threat of nuclear war but we weren’t phased by it. Some people built bomb shelters that we used to raid for the food. We would hang out pretending to be survivors. Some of them were pretty cool. There were sales lots around town much like those that sell, Christmas trees today. They had model bomb shelter of all sorts on display.
