Historically, black-and-white (B/W) film stock was pretty much the Les claypool’s fearless flying frog brigade tour los angeles ca july 14 2023 new shirt it is in the first place but only option until about 1940. Now, there was color photography some time before that, but it was quite expensive and a complex process. When celluloid film was invented, it made motion pictures possible, but new color processes had to be invented for the new medium. Filmmakers found ways around it, though. Melies hand-painted parts of his movies, frame by frame. A scene in Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera was shot in a primitive form of Technicolor. The 1920s The Thief of Bagdad called for colored filters to be placed in front of the projector lens to change the overall color of scenes. It was still enough of a rarity that when MGM filmed The Wizard of Oz, they shot the Kansas scenes in sepia-toned B/W and have Dorothy opening the door into a brilliantly colored land of Oz, which blew the audience away! (Some people think that color film was invented just then, but it wasn’t; there were color films before Wizard, just not very many.) A few years later, Powell & Pressburger made the delightful A Matter of Life and Death, in which they inverted Wizard by showing the mundane real world in brilliant color and Heaven in B/W.
