Cows are like all mammals in that they only produce milk for their young. Dairy cows have been bred over millennia to produce larger quantities of milk for longer periods of time but they still only produce commercially viable quantities of milk after giving birth to a calf. This means that commercial dairy operations have to artificially impregnate their cows on a regular schedule to keep production high.
