It’s not necessarily going to be easy. I can see it dwarfing the Human Genome Project and the Human Brain Mapping Project in terms of effort. I suspect that the outcomes will be as puzzling and, broadly, unhelpful as both those projects – the HGP has raised more questions than it answered. Altered states of consciousness are experienced naturally all the time; we just don’t pay much attention to them after they become familiar. In addition, altered states are possible through meditation, in sensory deprivation tanks (a.k.a. floatation tanks), or when becoming intoxicated from alcohol. No, absolutely not. We know what it is, a subset of the ongoing electrochemical processes in a living brain, but we do not yet understand everything about exactly how it functions. The electrochemical processes that take place in living brains are incredibly complex and intertwined. They also routinely drive neurons to modify their connections with each other. What we do know is that it is all part of our living, physical brains. We know that there are no ghosts in the machine and we know that brains can’t communicate directly with each other or with anything else. We use very sensitive and incredibly complex instruments to probe brain activity from the outside.
