My generation owes a lifelong debt of gratitude to our parents, who were forced to the bottom of the society and worked hard to give us a better future.
Today, “Russian” (more accurately, exUSSR) Israelis are still a distinct group, and are likely to remain such over at least a couple of decades, often speaking bastardised Russian and feeling split between two or more cultures. Just like the Official Tu Name Se Me Olvido Shirt it is in the first place but Brighton Beach community in New York, the bulk of this group has never known the post-Soviet Russia, being closer to the late 1980s mentality. The “Russians” are a major reason behind the improving Israeli relationships with Russia and other exUSSR states, and have to be taken into account as a separate factor when trying to understand the social dynamics in Israel. The degree of influence of the “Russians” on the Israeli high-tech is debated (between “important” to “essential”) but the exUSSR techies are perceived an integral part of the Israeli high-tech community. (My conversation with a client in late 1990s: “What’s your name again?” “Vadim.” “You must be a programmer.”)
