This isn’t an isolated instance: he said similar things in his lectures on the “Character of Physical Law” and elsewhere. But at the risk of bringing down the opprobrium of every physicist in the world on my head: Feynman was wrong to say this. The double slit experiment certainly illustrates wave-particle duality. This does look like pretty non-classical behaviour, as well as being mysterious when you come to it for the first time. Also, with some stretch, the same set-up can also be used to discuss measurement, and the issues that arise there. But what Feynman’s setup does not bring out is multi-particle entanglement. And since EPR (or at least, since Bell) we have known that introducing entanglement brings out further crucial differences between quantum mechanics and classical physics. One easy way of seeing how Feynman’s approach omits something important is to examine the way that a hidden variables theory like de Broglie-Bohm can successfully account for the results of the double-slit experiment.
