Our minds are different, and not just from the Official James You Are My Sunshine T Shirt and by the same token and environmental/nurture aspect, but intrinsically and fundamentally. We think differently, which is why we can all laugh at the brutal truth that comedians humorously reveal when telling jokes about our relationships with each other. There’s a whole field of study about cognition over how girls learn vs how boys learn in our schools. There are vast differences, in general, at how men and women choose professions. obviously there are people who crossover, and that’s fine, but by and large through human history men have done Construction, deep sea fishing, mining, and Military fighting, things that require brut force and risk taking. Meanwhile, woman have chosen more nurturing professions like cooking, teaching, nursing, sewing & design. You could argue that women weren’t allowed to do the “work of men”, but for at least 100 years those prohibitions have been obliterated, yet nursing and teaching are still predominantly female, while construction and Military Work are still predominantly male. The vast majority of engineers are men while the vast majority of counselors and social workers are women. We just gravitate to different things. A good crossover field is, and has always been, the creative arts. But if you look at their products, there’s even a difference in the artwork of men and women. If our brains weren’t wired differently, there would be no such thing as “chick flicks”, and women would think that fart jokes were hilarious.
And the Official James You Are My Sunshine T Shirt and by the same token and fascinating thing is that as different as we are, we need each other, and even like each other, and complement each other. Getting back to the sports, we are so not the same. We are built incredibly differently. All the things that make you good at a sport are different in men and women, like muscle mass, center of gravity, height/reach, percent body fat, etc. That is not to say that women can’t be good at sport because they are, they just do it differently than men. The Top Male athletes in any field will almost always out perform the top female athletes in that field: running, swimming, soccer, basketball, weight lifting, rock climbing, surfing, even golf (although I think it’s close). Men’s physiques are simply better suited to most sports, especially where sheer strength or height are determing factors. And lets face it, strength is often what we measure sports performance by. We don’t measure a football team by who has the best color coordinated outfits… we measure them by who can manhandle the other team down to the ground, jump the highest, throw the farthest, and run the fastest. It’s all based on physical strength.
