There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Without insulin, the body can no longer use glucose for energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the blood. This type of diabetes typically begins in childhood or adolescence and accounts for about 10% of all diabetes cases. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of all cases. It is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with type 2 diabetes are typically overweight or obese and do not produce enough insulin to keep their blood glucose levels under control. Over time, the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, leading to a buildup of glucose in the bloodstream.
