The goal is to use the renewable energy in transportation. Can we fuel our gas cars with biodiesel or bioethanol? Sure, for 12k miles per year per car, we need 0.5 acres to grow enough biomass for biodiesel or 0.86 acres for bioethanol. Seeding, fertilizing, application of pesticides, insecticides, harvesting, processing , transporting… and the cost? Significantly above the fossil based gas/diesel. How about electric powertrain? We need 125 square feet of solar array (or 1/4 of productive part of typical single house roof) to generate enough electricity for an average electric vehicle to travel 12k miles annually. One time install, no maintenance. Annual cost? Zero!
People complain about range, charging time and cost. Range is no longer issue. Charging time? For routine commute when you return home every day, overnight charging takes care of it. For longer trips, 30 minutes charging every 2–4 hours is tolerable. Or not? Vehicle cost? Much lower then yesterday and pays back when accounting for 5 year ownership. Affordable used EVs are also available. Fortunately, there are some steps travelers can take to reduce their environmental impact while exploring new places. Depending on your destination, you can also look into traveling by train or boat, since they tend to use less energy than flying.
