While drinking can shorten your life, it doesn’t do it to everyone who drinks heavily. It is an extremely painful way to live. If you can get sober, do all you can to stay that way! Yes, and for millions of people being an alcoholic does shorten life. Along with the health problems can come a host of emotional, circumstantial and social troubles. Families are hard to sustain in the face of the kinds of emotional downers that alcoholism generates in both the alcoholic and their intimate partners and kids. Keeping a steady job can also be difficult. If you or someone close to you suspect that you/they have a drinking problem, then contact your family doctor or the nearest community health clinic for referral to a licensed medical professional who treats alcoholics and their families. Our Thai friend who was a tour guide for people who visited the Old City of Sukhothai in the early 1970s, became an alcoholic, and despite my befriending him, I was unable to help him.
