Let’s say the Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 750 points tomorrow. That’s the news. Every news organization in the world will probably cover that, to some extent, in some way. Now, if by “news media websites”, you’re referring to a global newswire like Reuters or Associated Press or Bloomberg or Dow Jones, then yes, they’ll probably tackle that basic news coverage task the same way. They’ll report what happened, analyze the pattern of the day’s trading (did the selloff happen all at once?) and quote traders about the mood. Then they’ll talk to economists and investors, in search about information as to what it means. Now, each news organization probably will speak to different people. They may end up quoting some of the same facts (for instance, if an influential market analyst comes out with a public report saying that this is just a blip and that by year end, the Dow will be 5,000 points higher, and explaining why) but their individual Rolodexes/source lists (and who is answering their phones…) will determine who is mentioned in the article and what specific facts are provided lower down.
