Defensively, Hector Bellerin was a potential conduit for attacking options, yet due to a combination of poor work ethic and a tactical system that almost discarded his blistering speed, Bellerin has failed to live up to his expectations. In the midfield, there was a strong desire to push the ball forward, but not much else. Ramsey and Xhaka put in mediocre, bare-minimum performances at times on the defensive (despite passing convincingly into attractive areas of play on the attack,) and once again, the belief that a winning move was just around the corner was nowhere to be seen for much of the season. Then came the attacking options. Lacazette and Aubameyang. Wow. Were Aubameyang to have arrived earlier in the season, Arsenal could have contested for something more than a Europa League spot. Lacazette seems to have found his feet as a finisher, whilst Aubameyang towards the end of the season was given more freedom to chase the odd long ball that was pinged forwards, and as a result began to play better and more consistently. If their last games of last season are anything to go by, Arsenal could be in for a good year. Mikhitaryan may also find himself in favour this season with a manager that enjoys quick attacking almost as much as he does, although I think the spotlight will certainly be on Laca and Auba.
My one-to-watch player this season is Calum Chambers. It is this speculation as to what will happen to Calum that makes him a player to keep an eye on, if he makes it onto what I imagine right now will be an incredibly competitive team sheet.
