At any given point in time, no more than about 20% of DM patients have an impaired pancreas. AND… ONLY the pancreatic endocrine beta cells are damaged in MOST (99%) of them. The OTHER 90+% of the organ is FINE in that 99%. A pancreas transplant usually isn’t a treatment option for people with type 2 diabetes because type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or unable to use it properly, rather than due to a problem with insulin production in the pancreas. Even if a pancreatic cancer patient’s body did not reject a new transplanted pancreas, the odds of side effects and complications are high. Pancreas transplant recipients run the risk of experiencing blood clots, infections, hyperglycemia and urinary complications, among others.
