A few years ago when I saw a TV documentary on how full of lies the “history” of the Alamo is, as presented to defenseless school kids all over this bullied and benighted country. The documentary was built around letters recently found in the royal archives of Spain, reports from a Mexican Army Officer who as at the battle which throw quite a different light on how all that went down. That was also the first time I realized the the whole damn show was about a bunch of westward-drifting white southerners who were just outraged that they couldn’t bring, buy, or sell slaves in Texas because it was a Mexican territory, and Mexico (unlike the United States of Exploitation) had shortly beforehand made slavery illegal in its territories.
