Consciousness, I would argue, is simply awareness, but from the point of view of thing doing the awareness activity. I could, of course, be wrong, but I think as we figure out how to build intelligent systems, we will increasingly understand What is the nature of consciousness? Is it purely a product of the brain, or is there more to it than that? Yes, consciousness is as product of the brain. You can lose different parts of your body (an arm or leg for example) or have a body part replaced with someone else’s body part (a heart or kidney transplant for example) without it affecting properties of your consciousness such as personality, facial recognition, intelligence, memory, etc. However, a brain injury or brain tumor can drastically affect properties of your consciousness, even leaving you in a coma, so we know for sure that your consciousness is produced by your brain.
