The 1970s era Steelers. They won consecutive Super Bowls twice. They won Super Bowls 9 and 10, and later in the decade they won Super Bowls 13 and 14. The New England Patriots won both Super Bowls 38 and 39, following the conclusion of the 2003 and 2004 season respectively. Since then, the Seahawks, Chiefs, and Patriots have successfully returned to the Super Bowl the season after winning one, but all of them lost the second game. Seeing as how they are back in it, why can’t they win it again? Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce make up for a lot of deficiencies. But ultimately, the Chiefs played consistent, solid football, in all three phases of the game, the only sure way to win a Super Bowl. Their defense took the 5th most interceptions per game, giving their high scoring offense ample oppurtunities to possess the ball. Heck, their kicker, Harrison Butker, made more field goals than anyone in the league. Patrick Mahomes has taken up Tom Brady’s mantle as the face of the league, and will remain as such for at least the next decade. His style, being mobile without actually running across the line of scrimmage, is hardly revolutionary, as it has been previously employed by players like Fran Tarkenton and Russell Wilson, yet he uses it better than anyone in history. I anticipated that this was the likely outcome of the 2019–20 season before it even started, so I am not surprised that it happened.
